Games similar to Nancy Drew for younger audiences had few female characters (Freddie the Fish or Putt Putt are much in the same vein). Before I played Nancy Drew, the only “girl” video games I played The Barbie Horse Adventure game (which I do not recall) and The American Girl games which were like TellTale without action and more dress up and racism. The games were also “woke” for the time they originated in. Though your average 10 year old might not grasp the whole plot. They games also grew with you (kinda like Harry Potter), getting progressively more complex narratively, interface wise, and puzzle wise while still being something a 10 year old could eventually solve solo with dedication. Game play works well with multiple people playing together as you’ll need to take extensive notes as you go and being notetaker is just as serious a role as piloting the game. Most people still involved in the community started playing when either they or their child was 8-12 years old. You may be wondering how or why a game like this even existed to start with or grew to have 30+ installments. This schedule continued until 2016 when the next expected and promoted game, Midnight in Salem.just didn’t come out. One game was released a year until 2001 when they moved to a two games a year schedule. Nancy Drew is a point and click PC mystery game similar to Myst but aimed at girls and women and meant to be accessible to people age 8 and up. This is what I’ll be talking about today. What you may not know is she is also star of a video game franchise for the company HER Interactive with 32 installments. She’s been featured in hundreds of books ranging from children’s to YA, several movies, and will debute on The CW later this year. So you’ve probably heard of girl detective, Nancy Drew.
